Stunning Lake Matheson Walk

Lake Matheson is world famous for its beautiful mirror reflections of Aoraki Mount Cook, Mount Tasman, and the Southern Alps. It is one of the most beautiful locations in New Zealand, and an absolute must do experience on the West Coast.

The Walk

The peaceful Lake Matheson Walk is enjoyed by many visitors to the Fox Glacier region, and is suitable for all fitness levels. The track begins by crossing a suspension bridge over the Clearwater River, before weaving through lush native forest all the way around the lake.

Allow 40 minutes return to the Jetty Viewpoint, or 1 hour 40 minutes for the full loop track. It is an easy going and well-maintained track, with the advantage of good canopy trees to shelter you if it rains.

There are three separate Out Foxing Guides on Lake Matheson, available from Fox Glacier TOP 10. These guides are full of detail on small forest plants, rainforest giants, and places of interest along the track. Be sure to purchase an informative guide from our reception so you can be your own tour guide.

The Views

The view takes in New Zealand’s two highest snow clad peaks that get reflected in the water. The reflections are so clear because the lake is tinted almost black by leaf matter and algae.

If the weather is clear and calm, this really is a wonderful experience. Generally, the best conditions are early in the morning or in the evening, as this is when the lake tends to be the most still. As an added bonus, you might also get a great sunrise or sunset! If you do choose to go at dawn or dusk, make sure to bring an extra layer to keep warm.

While at each viewpoint, we recommend also keeping your eye on the water. You may be lucky enough to see an eel come up to the surface.
